It’s Stoptober! Along with Breast Cancer Awareness, October has been designated as the official month to transform from a nicotine addict to the wonderful world of breath and oxygen.
Mark Twain said quitting smoking was easy, he had done it dozens of times. The truth is after every cigarette you are an non-smoker until you light again. So you yourself have already quit hundreds if not thousands of times. So what makes you light up again? Yes it’s the nicotine, it’s the habit, it’s the boredom, it’s the misguided belief that smoking makes you look cool or adult. It’s all these and many more that are unique to you. Addictive behaviors are just that because we make them an integral part of who we believe we are. Change the belief and the physical addiction is very easy to manage, eliminate and move on from.
There are lots of ways to quit, gum, patch, cold turkey after renting a yurt in the Andes for six months but none of these work to change your belief system about yourself.
The numbers speak for themselves:
Hypnosis has an 87 to 90% success rate for those who follow the treatment protocol. University of Washington School of Medicine, Depts. of Anesthesiology and Rehabilitation Medicine, Int J Clin Exp Hypn. 2001 Jul;49(3):257-66. Barber J.
Hypnosis has been proven three times more effective than the patch and fifteen times more effective than willpower alone. University of Iowa, Journal of Applied Psychology, How One in Five Give Up Smoking. October 1992
Two years later, hypnosis clients are twice as likely to remain non-smokers than those who use other methods. Guided health imagery for smoking cessation and long-term abstinence. Wynd, CA. Journal of Nursing Scholarship, 2005; 37:3, pages 245-250
When you change who you believe you are, smoker, non-smoker, tinker, tailor, soldier, spy, you unlock the brain’s ability to effect healing in the body, changes in the thinking processes and create enlightenment of the spirit.
So in the end, it’s like the Ruby Slippers from the Wizard of OZ. You have the power. You can do anything you set your mind to, you just have to believe and learn how.
